USB-C Explained: Cables, Speeds, and Compatibility

USB-C is a connector shape, not a guarantee of speed or capability. Two cables that look identical can differ wildly in data rate and power delivery.

Check three things before you buy: the data standard (USB 2.0 vs USB 3.2 vs USB4/Thunderbolt), the power-delivery wattage, and whether the cable carries video. A charging-only cable will never drive your monitor, no matter how it looks.

When in doubt, label your cables. A small piece of tape noting “100W / video” saves a surprising amount of troubleshooting later.
